Earth overshoot day

Today, humanity uses the equivalent of 1.6 Earths to provide the resources we consume and to dispose of our waste. This means that it now takes the Earth one year and eight months to recreate what we use in one year. By overfishing, deforestation and releasing more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than forests can handle, we are using more ecological resources and services than nature can regenerate.

When do we exceed nature's budget?
Earth Overshoot Day is the day when humanity is estimated to have used up all the resources the Earth can produce for the whole year. During the rest of the year, our ecological deficit increases as we use up remaining natural resources and accumulate carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In short, we are living beyond our means.

In 2020, Earth Overshoot Day fell on 22 August. So far this year, over 30 countries have already passed their Overshoot Day! www.overshootday.org/newsroom/country-overshoot-days
