NOTE produces for international research project
The aim of the experiment is to study nuclear media under extreme conditions and to recreate the conditions that existed 1 microsecond after the creation of the universe in the Big Bang. The project aims to improve our understanding of what happened at the beginning of the universe and what is happening now.
Lund University is involved in the largest subsystem of "ALICE". It is a 100 m3 gas detector for registration of charged particles in three dimensions.

ALICE is one of the four experiments authorised at CERN's new LHC (Large Hadron Collider) accelerator under construction. The accelerator is expected to be operational in spring 2007.
ALICE is a collaborative project between about 80 different institutes from all over the world where Avd. for Experimental High Energy Physics in Lund is one of these. The total number of people involved is about 1000 and the total cost of the project is about 800 MSEK.
The aim of the experiment is to study nuclear matter under extreme conditions of high temperature and high density. Under these conditions, we expect to recreate the conditions that existed about 1 microsecond after the birth of the universe in the Big Bang by colliding heavy atomic nuclei with each other at very high energies. Information obtained by analysing these collisions will contribute not only to our understanding of what happened at the beginning of the universe but also what is happening.
These cards are the heart of the readout and processing of the information collected by the large TPC detector. Each FEC will contain 128 readout channels and the total number of readout channels is about 500 000. After assembly and testing, these cards will be installed on the detector at the LHC accelerator. Once installed, it will be extremely difficult to access them for repairs, etc. This places enormous demands on reliability, which means that assembly and testing must be done in a way that we can guarantee continuous operation for about a 10-year period.
